20 years ago acupuncture came into my life in the most unexpected way. I was working for a company and had been given the task of MC at one of the events. My stage fright got the best of me and a debilitating migraine set in. It was so bad that I would have to go into the bathroom during breaks, my head pounding and throw up. I kept trying advil or other migraine meds and they just couldn't provide any relief. I was accustomed to getting migraines and knew that the stress of the event and sleepless nights preparing, along with the nervousness of being on stage was the culprit. I thought I would have to suffer through, as the "show must go on". We broke for lunch and I went backstage, and this angelic man, Phillip Manicom, came to the table where I sat, head in hands, praying for my migraine to go away. He had heard I was having a migraine attack and began to explain that he was an acupuncturist and although he did not have his needles with him, could do some acupressure to see if it could help. He used his healing hands to apply pressure to different points of my neck and head. By the time lunch was over I did not have a headache, nor was I getting sick. I still had stage fright, but that was overcome with joy for my headache being gone. I was in total aw and immense appreciation. He extended an invitation for me to come see him at his Coconut Grove facility for additional treatments in which I did. I had a series of treatments and to this day do not suffer from migraines anymore.
I have used acupuncture when I have pain in a certain area of my body, for infertility, and recently did a series for menopause, carpal tunnel and neuropathy. I remember one time having bad shoulder pain and when the needles were doing their magic feeling a release of tension that had been stored up. Another time I was sent home with tiny needles behind my ears. At the age of 40, after over 10 years of trying to conceive, I became pregnant. I attribute my miracle baby at age 41 to all of the different holistic approaches I embraced, along with letting go. I honestly didn't think about it for menopause until i came across some articles about it helping with hot flashes. My neuropathy in my hand was so bad, keeping me awake at night on a cruise recently. I went to the spa on the cruise ship and had a series of treatments from an acupuncturist from India that also did electroacupuncture. The acupuncture needles were inserted into me, but had wires attached to them that went to a tense-like machine so that a small electric current could be sent to the area where I was experiencing neuropathy. It was interesting watching my hands and feet twitching. It helped immensely and I was able to sleep better. Often pairing massage and acupuncture helps, and they often work with chiropractors as well to work up an overall treatment plan depending on your ailment. Acupuncture has also been used to treat addictions, sleep disorders, and stress management.

Do some research online to see if it may be a good fit or you. I recommend finding someone that you feel comfortable with and is reputable. Often the first visit is to explain what acupuncture is and to access a treatment plan. Check with your health insurance company too, as some are providing coverage. Always go in with an open mind, wear loose, comfortable clothing in which your knees and stomach are available if needed and do not drink alcohol or other vices the day prior or after to get the most out of your treatments. I try to relax and meditate during a treatment, feeling zen like after. Treatments are typically 30 minutes, but can be longer or shorter depending on the practitioner and your concerns. The first session is always the longest as an overview of your medical history helps them treat the whole person. Acupuncture is often couple with Chinese medicine or other herbs. I have a phobia of shots/needles, but these needles of joy touched me in a way I will always be grateful for. You could say it was love at first poke:)
